Murder / Homicide / Vehicular Homicide / Manslaughter
Murder/Homicide is often thought of as the highest charge a person can get, with the most severe consequences. While it is an extremely serious charge, there are a number of ways murder may be charged against a person, and it is not always the charge with the most severe consequences. These charges are all considered crimes of violence and all of them come with very severe consequences.
In Colorado, there are at least five different ways a person may be charged with murder, homicide, or manslaughter:
Murder in the First Degree (C.R.S. 18-3-102)
Murder in the Second Degree (C.R.S. 18-3-103)
Manslaughter (C.R.S. 18-3-104)
Criminally Negligent Homicide (C.R.S. 18-3-105)
Vehicular Homicide (C.R.S. 18-3-106)
There is also a felony murder rule, whereby a person can still be charged with murder if they were a party to a crime, such as a robbery, and during the course of the actions which constituted the felony crime they are charged with a person was killed. Even if the person killed was killed by another person in the group committing the underlying crime, the homicide may be charged to each of the parties committing the underlying charge.
